Description:
General Specs: John Dickson & Son , 1879, .500 Black Powder Express, 7lbs. 5oz., LOP 14 3/8"
Serial Number:  3530

John Dickson & Son built this beautiful rifle in the falling block design.  Dickson was known for quality barrel work, and you can see it in this instance with the integral top rib, dovetail mounted V-notch flip up express rear sight, and dovetail mounted front post.  The bore rates 9.5 out of 10, with strong rifling.  On the top of the breech is engraved “Henry’s Patent A No 84”. The falling block is nitre blued, with a notable mark into the steel.  In various spots, behind the hammer, inside the trigger guard, and behind the underlever you can see the beautiful case color in vibrant variation; on the rest of the receiver the case color has turned to a rich, deep colored patina.  My favorite detail of this gun is the intricate scroll engraving in the top tang, beautifully executed.   The shows light handling marks, more significant near the forend, but overall a handsome oil finish on a pretty piece of wood with nice checkering and very good wood to metal fit.  On the underside of the stock you’ll find a stud for a sash style rifle sling, an empty oval inlay ready for your initials, and an attractive horn grip cap with engraved screw. The buttstock terminates in a metal buttplate with a widows peak nib, featuring scroll work near the top for decoration and cut checkering for grip.  There are nitro loads available for these cartridges, if black powder isn’t attractive to you.  Ready for its next safari, or as a featured piece in a collection of fine arms, this handsome rifle in the venerable .500 Black Powder Express is here for your consideration.  Please enjoy the photos and detailed specs. Also of note; this gun has a “Little Brother” available as well – a Alexander Henry .360 BPE weighing just 4lbs. 12oz. in an almost identical format.  They would be quite the pair as an addition to any collection.
