Description:
***   SOLD SOLD  SOLD   ***   Handsome, rare, and very nice handling Alfred Lancaster 20 bore bar-in-wood hammergun with rebounding hammers and sidelever opener. Lancaster serial number 4155 was made circa 1874 and has 30” highly figured nitro Damascus barrels. It also has the very desirable sidelever opener which allows the action to be opened when the hammers are cocked. Double triggers and extractors. The engraving is sharp and there is some residual case coloring. Highly figured French walnut stock with hand rubbed satin oil finish. Presented in its leather case with maker's label. Very easy to carry for a day afield, this wand weighs in at 5lb 9oz.

The highly figured nitro Damascus barrels are 30” in length and were reproved in London in 1993 for nitro 2-3/4” shotshells. The barrels are topped by a raised solid concave gamestyle rib which is inscribed “A. Lancaster 27 South Audley St. Grosvenor Sqre London”. The browning of the barrels is in very good condition and the bores are shiny with some minor pitting typical of guns from this era. The right barrel is bored 0.638 with a constriction of 0.006 for Improved Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.025. The left barrel is also bored 0.638 and has a constriction of 0.020 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.023.

The straight grip stock and splinter forearm are made of highly figured French walnut with heel and toe plates on a checkered butt. The hand rubbed satin oil finish is in very good condition with a few very minor handling marks from normal usage. Checkering is crisp. There is a blank initial plate on the bottom of the stock and a smaller on the comb near the butt. Stock dimensions are 14-1/4” to a checkered butt by 1-5/8” by 2-1/4”. Cast off for the righthanded shot.

This handsome small bore Lancaster is a joy to handle and shoot with its 30” nitro Damascus barrels and sidelever opener. Wands like this don’t come along very often. Don’t let it get away.
