Description:

History
Originally factory marked and barrel chambered for 22 Hornet .  It was factory rechambered for 222 Rem and marked as such.  The barrel has both markings. These are both rare calibers for the early Model 70.  The gun was manufactured in 1941 and is in overall excellent condition with just a couple of light marks that do not break the varnish.  It has the desirable widows peak steel buttpate and a 24" barrel.  The serial numbers on the bolt and receiver match.  Very collectable piece to say the least.

Overview
A 1940 Winchester Model 70 is a "pre-war" bolt-action rifle, featuring a controlled-feed Mauser-type claw extractor, three-position wing safety, and a walnut stock with cut checkering. These rifles are highly prized for their all-steel construction, 24-inch barrels (standard), and superior accuracy, often considered the "Rifleman's Rifle".

Key 1940 Pre-War Model 70 Specifications:
  • Action: Bolt-action with controlled round feeding and a large claw extractor.
  • Safety: Three-position wing-type safety.
  • Trigger: Adjustable for pull weight and over-travel.
  • Calibers: Offered in many, with .30-06 Springfield and .270 Winchester being common.
  • Barrel Length: Standard Sporters typically had 24-inch barrels, though others existed.
  • Stock: Walnut, featuring hand-cut checkering and a steel buttplate.
  • Receiver: Machined from solid bar stock, featuring an open bridge top, often with stripper clip guides.
  • Weight: Approximately 7.5lbs
  • Sights: Usually equipped with a ramped front sight and a folding rear sight.
Pre-War models (including 1940) are recognized by their superior quality, specifically the pre-war variants that often featured superior fit and finish, and often lacked scope drill-and-tap holes from the factory, which was standard before the popularity of scoped rifles.
