Description:
This is a very rare 1862 production Cook & Bro 33 inch Infantry Rifle. All numbers are matching on the barrel, lock, rear band, screw heads, and nosecap. The front band is numbered 1347 which is only 6 numbers after the rest of the gun and was most likely a factory error. It is common to find mismatched numbers on Cook's. Markings on the lock are weak but legible if you hit it with a light and look closely. Good mechanical function. Retains a pleasing patina overall with some old rust and light to moderate pitting. Barrel markings are almost all gone, but you can make out the serial number as well as PROVED on the left side of the barrel. Stock has had some restoration in the lock area. Missing the rear screw in sling swivel. The front sight was period modified into a blade and the top of the front band flattened, possibly done by the Confederate soldier in the field for ease of sighting. This gun falls in the serial number range of guns that were made under contract for the State of Alabama in 1862, and it has been speculated that some of these in this range were actually completed in Selma AL despite being N.O. marked. The lock mark correctly features a static first national flag that is nice and clear, behind the hammer. It is also marked: COOK & BROTHER N.O. 1862 1341, all in a single line. Ramrod, while appearing original and certainly in matching condition, may actually be for a P56 Enfield rifle, it is threaded at the bottom. While all Cook & Brother products are rare, those items bearing the early production New Orleans markings are exceptionally hard to find, and it will be a very long time before you come across another, especially at this price point! Serial number is 1341
