This type is illustrated in British & Commonwealth Bayonets, by Skennerton & Richardson, pages 105. These Pattern 1839 muskets are earlier muskets that were upgraded to the Lovell Catch system. The bayonet started out life as a Brown Bess style musket that was so often used during the American Revolution and after. The bayonet itself would have started out life from just before the war of 1812 because of the maker Mark at the base of the blade. It still shows the "S. CHAMBERS" maker's Mark. This firm produced bayonets in England till 1813. This has the land pattern, straight face to it with the long 4 inch socket. It is about 21 ¾ inches overall. The inside of the musket M.R.D. socket measures 24.7mm in diameter. The 17 inch blade is marked Crown over 3 and a few other marks at the ricasso. The face of the socket is also marked with a Crown and other marks. Over all in very good+ condition with a gray silver patina and light oxidation. Please see photo's for fine details.; Price: $259.00 |
