It is famously referred to as the "Zouave Rifle", apparently nicknamed around 1900 by Bannerman's military surplus, referring to the color case-hardened locks, blued barrel, and brass trim--linking it to the colorful Zouave uniforms. .58 caliber, 33" round barrel, two barrel bands, and large lug near barrel end for saber-type bayonet. Lock action is perfect. Caps are not original. Wood is excellent, with one age crack (see photo). All stamps and markings are crisp and sharp, as is the pictured cartouche. Overall VERY GOOD++ condition. Barrel in areas has brown patina. A really nice example of Civil War rifle, described by Flayderman as "one of the best made and designed military arms" of the era.
