Description:
For sale we have a custom U.S. Remington model 1917 bolt action rifle in .378 Weatherby Magnum.  This rifle was built in 1955/56 by legendary gunmaker Al Biesen on order as one of a pair of rifles.  The customer had also reached out to famed writer Jack O'Connor regarding the build and caliber selection, and all of the correspondence between the three of them is included - three letters from Biesen, as well as a repair tag with a humorous typewritten note from Biesen regarding the test firing of it.  There are two letters from Jack O'Connor offering opinions on the build and caliber selection, and a postcard from Jack as well.  The rifle itself was made to order by Al, (after apparently much discussion of stock blanks) on what Al describes as an exceptionally dense piece of myrtelwood, with "barrel of best grade steel", full conversion on a U.S. Remington 1917 action, Dayton speed lock trigger conversion, deluxe bolt handle, and bluing.  Al charged $765 for the work, as shown on the letter dated from December of 1956.  The rifle remains in excellent condition as built by Al with only a few light handling marks.  There is a replacement New England Custom Guns red recoil pad that was done recently.  The original letter shows a Bausch & Lomb scope (missing), and there is installed a Lyman receiver sight.  Al's signature is plainly visible inside the stock underneath the barrel.  Lastly, there is included a 1955 Custom Gunmaker catalog/pricelist from Al Biesen.  This is just an astounding piece of American firearms history.  Weight of rifle is 9 pounds, 2.8 ounces, barrel length is 24", LOP is 14-1/8".
