" U.S. military National Match service pistol built on an original U.S. Model 1911 frame and rebuilt through the National Match program at Rock Island Arsenal. Pistols prepared under the U.S. military National Match program were carefully assembled and tuned by arsenal armorers using specially selected components in order to produce pistols capable of superior accuracy for service pistol competition. This example exhibits the characteristic features of a National Match assembled pistol. The frame is marked “NM", indicating National Match preparation, and the barrel and barrel bushing are likewise marked “NM," denoting match-selected and fitted components. These pistols were assembled with particular attention to barrel fit, lockup, and slide-to-frame tolerances in order to produce the highest level of accuracy possible while remaining within service pistol specifications. The slide bears external match assembly numbers, markings commonly encountered on U.S. military match pistols and used by arsenal armorers to track fitted components during the assembly and maintenance of match guns. The pistol retains a parkerized arsenal finish consistent with mid-20th-century U.S. military rebuild and National Match preparation. Internal components display the careful fitting typical of arsenal match work. The rear sight is an adjustable target type mounted to the slide. Adjustable sights were frequently installed or modified by shooters participating in service pistol competition, and the presence of this sight is consistent with the practical evolution of many National Match pistols during their service life. Overall condition is excellent as arsenal refinished with light handling wear. Mechanically excellent. An attractive and historically interesting U.S. National Match service pistol assembled at Rock Island Arsenal, representing the military’s efforts to produce highly accurate service pistols for competitive shooting and marksmanship training.
