Description:
French Model 1840 - .69 Cal Percussion Musket St. Etienne Civil War Era Import

French Model 1840 .69 Cal Percussion Musket St. Etienne Civil War Era Import + Bayonet

For sale is a genuine French Modèle 1840 (Mle 1840) percussion musket manufactured at the Manufacture Royale de Saint-Étienne (clearly marked "M.Rle de St. Etienne" on the lockplate and "Mle 1840" on the tang).

This is a classic Civil War-era import — thousands of these French muskets were purchased by both Union and Confederate forces to supplement domestic production.

Key Features & Markings:
Back-action percussion lock with strong "M.Rle de St. Etienne" stamp Barrel tang clearly marked Mle 1840 Multiple French inspector/proof marks including "VA", "MA"/"VM", "K C de 18" (or similar contrôle marks), and assembly number "2"
.69/.70-.71 caliber
Approx. 42–43" barrel, overall length ~57–58"
Walnut stock with original iron furniture (three bands, trigger guard, etc.)
Complete with correct period socket bayonet that fits the lug Steel ramrod present Honest service patina with light pitting and wood dings consistent with 180+ years of age — no modern refinishing or heavy restoration This musket shows typical field use wear but remains mechanically sound with tight wood-to-metal fit. It's a fantastic representative piece for any Civil War collection, reenacting, or black-powder shooting (black powder only, of course — have a gunsmith check it first if firing).

These Saint-Étienne Mle 1840s are increasingly sought after as authentic European imports from the War Between the States. Condition: Good+ original collector grade — strong markings, functional lock and mechanics, nice untouched appearance.
