Description:
CIVIL WAR|WILD WEST Antique SHARPS New Model 1859 SADDLE RING Carbine .52

Iconic Carbine of the FRONTIER and WESTERN LORE

Here Ancestry Guns present an antique Sharps New Model 1859 Saddle Ring Carbine, made circa the start of the American Civil War, in Hartford, Connecticut with a production run between 1859 and 1863. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. In 1867, the U.S. Ordnance Department contracted with the Sharps Rifle Company for conversion of over 30,000 Sharps percussion carbines and 1,000 rifles to either the .52-70 rimfire or the .50-70 GOVT centerfire configuration. Some of these arms retained their original six-groove rifling, while the bores of others were re-lined with three-groove rifling. New buttstocks without cartridge boxes were used in all cases where replacement was required, regardless of the original configuration. These carbines were issued to the regular cavalry regiments on the western frontier and remained in service until they were replaced by the Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Carbine.

The most famous, single-shot percussion firearm used during the Civil War was this Sharps saddle ring carbine, a .52 caliber breech-loading with a 22-inch barrel. Without a doubt, nearly all of these carbines saw service with both Union and Confederate regiments and was the most widely used cavalry arm of the Civil War. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. These powerful, accurate, and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the Western Frontier. The Sharps rifles became icons of the American Old West due to their appearances in many Western movies and books. Perhaps as a result, a number of different rifle companies currently offer reproductions of the Sharps rifle. But, here you can have the original!

This is one of the iconic carbines of Western lore, as they were handy, accurate, powerful and reliable guns, and many went to the Western Frontier as trappers, explorers and settlers moved that way. They experienced some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the West, and the connecting of the coasts with the Transcontinental Railroad.

The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong. The bore is reflective with strong rifling. The receiver tang is cracked but does not move. The forend is a replacement, which is missing its barrel band spring and has a short split on the right side. Replacement saddle ring.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 22 inches.

Caliber: .52 Percussion
