Description:
Unadorned but sturdy Alex Henry lightweight 12 bore Anson & Deeley boxlock ejector. This storied Edinburgh gunmaker was known for the high quality of his shotguns and rifles. Border engraved with double triggers, automatic ejectors, and auto safety. Nicely figured European walnut straighthand stock and splinter forearm recently refinished in a hand rubbed satin oil finish. Recently re-blacked barrels. Alex Henry serial number 8236 was made in 1928. Presented in its original leather case with maker’s label, a two-piece mahogany cleaning rod and a set of keys. Very easy to carry for a day afield at 6lb even.

The 28” nitro steel barrels are chambered for 2-1/2” shotshells. Rumors to the contrary notwithstanding low pressure 2-1/2” cartridges are readily available in the US from Clays Ammo, Game Bore, and RST Shells. The barrels are topped by a solid thin swamped slightly tapered rib which is inscribed “Alex. Henry & Co. 22 Frederick St. Edinburgh & Glasgow & Aberdeen”. The bluing is excellent and the bores are shiny and bright. The right barrel is bored 0.724 with a constriction of 0.000 for Cylinder choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.032. The left barrel is bored 0.726 and has a constriction of 0.030 for Full choke. Minimum wall thickness is 0.030.

The straighthand stock and splinter forearm are made of straight figured European walnut with a recent hand rubbed oil finish and it has a blank initial plate. The checkering is crisp. Nice checkered butt. Stock dimensions are 14-3/8” to a checkered butt by 1-1/4” by 1-7/8”. Cast off for the righthand shot.

This is a sturdy Scottish double from one of the great Edinburgh gunmakers with reblacked barrels and furniture but some staining on the action body. It is tight on face and in good mechanical condition. And the wood is nicely figured and recently refinished to a nice warm colored hand rubbed satin oil finish. Note that the case handle needs repair. A great gun for grouse, woodcock, and quail hunters who are not put off by the heavy brush in their favorite coverts.
