Description:
Serial #11112, .32 Long Rim Fire, with a matching number 25 7/8 inch part round / part octagon barrel with a near excellent, bright bore with a very slight bit of roughness inside the grooves near the breech. This is a Model 1873 single shot rifle manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company in Chicopee Falls. This example has the Hadley's Patent device installed and looks like it could be switched from RF to Centerfire. Interestingly there is a very finely machined joint where the round barrel meets the taper from the octagon portion which does not appear on the inside of the barrel. In very fine condition the barrel shows 65-70% thinning blue finish which is toning to brown having some scattered freckling. The frame and action are well marked and show some original case-color with the balance muted and toning to pewter-gray. The walnut stock is solid with some old marks and contusions having the steel butt plate which is mostly plum-brown showing old surface oxidation. It is very nicely equipped with the original Maynard flip up tang peep sight that is finely marked with graduations to 120 yards. The front sight is an original flip up Beech combination sight and it has an adjustable sporting rear sight that is installed with 2 dovetails. The action functions properly with a tight lock up. A very nice example of an 1873 Maynard rifle that will be fun to shoot. Antique
