PLATE Burnside Model 1865 Heavy Barreled SPENCER Pictured in SPENCER REPEATING FIREARMS by MARCOT Here Ancestry Guns present an antique A.J. Plate San Francisco Retailer Burnside-Spencer Model 1865 Repeating Rifle, made circa 1865 by the Burnside Rifle Company in Providence, Rhode Island. The action of this rifle was originally produced by the Burnside Rifle Co. as one of 34,000 intended for purchase by the U.S. government, 30,500 of which were actually purchased. Flayderman notes that the remaining 3,500 not purchased by the government were likely either destroyed as rejects or possibly sold commercially, which presents a viable explanation for this rifle in its current configuration. This specific rifle is pictured on page 149 of Spencer Repeating Firearms by Roy Marcot, along with other gunsmithed, heavy-barreled adaptations. The top flat of the barrel is marked “A.J. PLATE SAN FRANCISCO CAL” indicating that this was converted to this sporting configuration by the prolific California retailer for sale to the clientele that treated San Francisco as a place to stock up on equipment and supplies for the more remote and dangerous activities such as hunting, trapping, mining, and logging in the mid-19th Century. This rifle would have been built with those men in mind as they tangled with bandits and dangerous animals. This particular example appears to have been originally produced as a military pattern saddle ring carbine before being fitted with a heavy 32 inch octagon barrel by the A.J. Plate & Co. firm, as well as a sporting type forearm with a unique brass band holding the upper sling swivel and a matching brass forearm cap which has had a previous ramrod hole filled with a conical bullet. The top of the breech has the standard Model 1865, Spencer patent, and Burnside Rifle Co. markings and the serial number is on the upper rear of the receiver. The barrel has an empty front sight dovetail, an elevation adjustable notch rear sight. It is fitted with a Stabler cutoff device and sling swivels on the bottom of the stock and the previously mentioned brass band on the forearm. The forearm and stock are both smooth and the stock is fitted with the military pattern buttplate. The Spencer was a very successful carbine that was desirable on Civil War battlefields due to its handy size, accuracy, and rate of fire. The magazine tube in the butt holds 7 shots and a captured Confederate soldier is quoted as saying that you “load in the morning and fire all day!” The inventor, Christian Spencer, had the unique opportunity to personally instruct President Abraham Lincoln as he test-fired the rifle, resulting in more military sales The overall condition is good. This example is period reconfigured by A.J. Plate. Strong action. Original patinas. The bore is mostly bright with serviceable rifling. The butt stock is solid showing honest period use. A chip is missing at the top of the left comb at the buttplate. A stable split runs up the middle of the forend on the bottom. Absent front sight. A classic example from California during the era when the West was yet untamed! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32 inches.
