Description:
We have here a rifle in excellent condition which was proofed in the Zella Mehlis Proof House sometime during WWII, identified by a fir tree inside of a heart proof mark shown in one of the photos. There is no date of mfg. on this rifle. It was made by Edgar Kiess who was a well-known gunsmith in Suhl, Germany from about 1920 thru at least 1945. He came from a long line of gunsmiths and his brother, Fritz, founded Fritz Kiess Company (Gunmakers) in 1919, and operated until April 28, 1945 when it was given to the Soviets. This rifle has a set trigger, which functions perfectly, and is in the 8 x 57 caliber. The serial number is 5237, and it is stamped “Nich. For S”. I believe it to be unfired. The stock, which is numbered to the rifle, is oil finished, probably hand rubbed, with no scratches, dents, or dings. The bluing is 100%. The bore is perfect. This rifle is tastefully engraved, with stippling cut on the front receiver ring, being a true work of art! What a wonderful example of a custom-made Mauser rifle by a prominent east German gunsmith during the war years.
There are some issues which I want to mention. There are screwdriver scratches around and on each screw head. I will include these in the photographs. Also, to close the bolt from its open position, one must slightly depress the cartridge lifter so the bolt can clear the back of the lifter. The thumb safety is very stiff, lubrication may help.
All things considered, this rifle appears to have been well cared for by the previous owner(s).
