The Norinco SKS Type 56 is a semi-automatic, gas-operated rifle based on the Soviet SKS design by Sergei Simonov in 1945. The Type 56 was adopted by the People’s Liberation Army of China in 1956, hence the name, and was produced in large numbers for decades.
Norinco exported these rifles widely, including to North America, often with fixed bayonet versions or folding-bayonet models. The Type 56 is known for its durability, simplicity, and ruggedness, making it popular with collectors, civilian shooters, and military surplus enthusiasts.
The Type 56 is almost identical to the original SKS, but Norinco added some subtle differences: a slightly shorter bayonet lug, stamped receiver markings, and a black polymer or laminated stock in some export models.
