Description:
"NSN. Manufactured circa 1854 by Springfield Armory, chambered in .69 caliber,42"" round rifled barrel. The metal remains in the bright with light surface oxidation noted, consistent with age and storage. The Model 1842 was originally produced as a smoothbore musket, with a portion later re-arsenaled at Springfield Armory and rifled with the addition of a rear sight, of which approximately 9,929 examples were converted. The stock shows light nicks, dings, and scratches while retaining good overall integrity. This example represents an important transitional U.S. military arm bridging the gap between smoothbore muskets and rifled infantry weapons on the eve of the Civil War. The action holds at both half and full cock, remaining mechanically functional. The musket is accompanied by a “U.S." marked socket bayonet.
