Description:
Wonderful Custom Built Aged Samuel Hawken St. Louis Percussion Half Stock Plains Rifle with Tiger Maple Stock, American Eagle Inlay, & Double Set Triggers, .50 Cal, mfg. circa 2000. This is a fantastic contemporary custom hand made fully functional firing historical reproduction of the legendary Hawken rifle. It is only marked “S. HAWKEN / ST. LOUIS” on the barrel and lock in the correct original style font with no signature I can find to indicate who actually built the rifle. The octagon barrel measures 32 13/16" long including the breech plug and 15/16" across the flats of the breech tapering slightly to 7/8" at the muzzle. It is fitted with a large German silver blade front sight atop a dovetailed brass base with a fixed buckhorn rear set far forward as the original Hawken's were. The metal is artificially aged with a finely textured rough surface and a dark plum/gray patina. Beautifully figured striped Tiger Maple stock features a raised cheekpiece with engraved American Eagle solid silver inlay. Nicely fitted brass wrist repair plates and palm rest plate are engraved along the boarders with heavy wear along the edges of the palm inlay. I don't think the wrist was ever actually cracked and the “repair” was just added for charm. The wood has a rich vibrant color with heavy carrying wear applied around the wrist and forearm. Just one 1" grain crack behind the nosecap on the right side with some very light handling marks. Three old brass tacks decorated along the bottom of the stock in frontier fashion. Iron buttplate, patchbox, triggerguard, and nosecap with double wedge fastened barrel. Turned iron ramrod pipes with iron tipped wood rammer. Action and double set triggers are very crisp and function perfectly. Clean nipple. Excellent bright and shiny bore with wide six-groove rifling. Rifle is light and well balanced at 8 lbs 9 oz. In my mind this is the closest you can get to owning a genuine 19th century Hawken without spending $50,000-100,000 AND you can actually shoot it! It certainly has the look of an original Hawken and would be a huge hit at any mountain man rendezvous or reenactment. Jeremiah Johnson Trading sells antique arms manufactured prior to 1899 and muzzleloading blackpowder reproductions only.
