Description:
WEIMAR Era MAUSER M1896 BOLO 7.63x25mm BROOMHANDLE Pistol C&R HOLSTER STOCK

Handgun Made Famous by the BOLSHEVIKS

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Mauser Model 1896 “Bolo” Broomhandle Pistol, made circa 1923-1930. The Mauser Construktion 96 was the Mauser Company’s most successful pistol and was even used by the likes of Winston Churchill during the Boer Wars. He is attributed as saying that it was “the best thing in the world”. This variant has a shorter barrel and is also known as the M1921 or the “Bolo”, the latter due to its association with the Bolsheviks and the Red Army after the Bolshevik Revolution. “Bolo” was a derogatory term for those who identified as Bolsheviks. The victorious communists purchased many of these pistols and likely scavenged them from their defeated enemies, the Whites, who also bought them in large quantities. These were certainly popular in other parts of the world as well and were heavily adopted by many in the post-WWI German Freikorps, who fought against communists in the Balkans.

The distinctive characteristics of the Model 1896 are the integral fixed magazine loaded with stripper clips in front of the trigger, the long barrel, the wooden shoulder stock which gives it the stability of a short-barreled rifle and doubles as a holster or carrying case, and a grip shaped like the handle of a broom. The grip earned the gun the nickname “broomhandle” in the English-speaking world, because of its round wooden handle, and in China the C96 was nicknamed the “box cannon” because of its rectangular internal magazine and that it could be holstered in its wooden box-like detachable stock. With its long barrel and high-velocity cartridge, the Mauser C96 had superior range and better penetration than most other pistols of its era. This pistol is chambered in the 7.63×25mm Mauser cartridge, which was the highest-velocity commercially manufactured pistol cartridge until the advent of the .357 Magnum cartridge in 1935.

This overall condition is fine. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. Grips are solid. And in very nice shape. Numbers match throughout. The grips are old replacements with the original number struck and the matching number stamped in. The holster stock is in very good condition and the number is not matching. Here is a historically significant firearm that was thoroughly embroiled in the various uprisings of communism in the early 20th century!
