Number 44 Sporting RARE 1 of Roughly 2000 Post CIVIL WAR Rifles in RF and CF! Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Merrimack Arms & Mfg. Co. Number 44 Ballard’s Patent Sporting Rifle made circa 1867-69 in Newburyport, Massachusetts. In spring of 1866 Edward Bray of Brooklyn, New York, former partner of Joseph Merwin, purchased Ballard machinery from R. Ball & Co. and set up a new plant in Newburyport, Massachusetts, primarily for production of sporting rifles. The glut of surplus arms on the market following American Civil War, however, forced him into bankruptcy in early 1869, after producing only about 2,000 of these Ballard rifles. As is this one, the caliber was usually marked on the top of the barrel or frame, along with the serial number. This one, for example, is No 44 with 19073. Serial numbers continue in sequence of Ball & Williams/R. Ball & Co. production. Serial number sequence ran from about 18,000 through 20,300, making this example about in the middle of the production run. Barrel lengths on this model were 22, 24, 28, and 30 inches with calibers in .22, .32, .44, .46, and .50 rimfire. The left side of the frame is marked with both manufacturing and patent marks, “MERRIMACK ARMS & MFG. CO./NEWBURYPORT, MASS.” over “BALLARD'S PATENT/ NOV. 5, 1861”. The overall condition is very good. Traces of original finish. The action is strong. Bright bore with sharp rifling. Markings are legible. Both the forarm and buttstock are good with average wear. A crack on the top left side of the grips is present at the frame, and remains stable. A plug repair has been made on the bottom of the buttstock. Here is a fantastic, rare Merrimack Arms rifle for display or collecting! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 22 inches. Caliber: .44 Rimfire and Centerfire Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
