Leman (1812–1887) of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, was a prolific 19th-century gunmaker renowned for durable percussion "Indian trade rifles". Operating from 1834 to 1861, Leman supplied thousands of rifles to the U.S. government, traders, and settlers, marking them "LEMAN / LANCASTER. PA.". This is a very nice example of a Leman Pennsylvania half stock rifle, circa 1850. This rifle is in remarkable condition for its age. These rifles were known to be quite accurate. The nipple has been replaced, but may need some attention before firing. It has obviously been stored for some time and it is time to put it to use.!! This particular example has some differences from other Lemans I've seen. Most are larger calibers - this is .36 caliber. The stock is inlayed with a silver oval in the cheek piece, which has an AMERICAN EAGLE engraved in it and the silver left barrel pin execution has a flourish of engraving as does the lock plate execution. I believe the finish is original. Barrel is octagonal, with strong rifling. The barrel measures 34 inches and the overall length is 48. inches. On the lock plate is LEMAN / LANCASTER, PA. There maybe engraved initials on the barrel, but I can not make it out. It's obvious that this rifle has never been abused and is in overall very good using condition. Price: $1,695.00 |
