Description:
U.S. PROPERTY World War 2 REMINGTON-RAND M1911A1 Semi-Auto C&R 1942 HOLSTER

UNITED STATES ARMY Model Chambered in .45 ACP

Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Remington-Rand Model of 1911A1 U.S. Army Pistol with a Joseph Mosser 1942 Holster, made in 1943 in Syracuse, New York. This one belonged to Captain Edson Marshall Paradise (1916-1990). Edson received his B.S. in electrical Engineering from Purdue in 1940, having been in the Tau Epsilon Phi Jewish fraternity. His draft card from that year indicates that he was working for the Webster Company in Chicago, a maker of electronic components. Type from that period indicates that he was a Lieutenant circa March 1943, and he spent much of his service during World War II in the UK, where he married his wife. One somewhat humorous article quotes him while on a visit home on leave where he talks about the surprisingly good British morale despite having a very poor, highly rationed diet. Since he was stationed and working with the British and not encamped with the Americans he became used to eating fish and various types of game, including crow, to supplement their paltry issued rations.

John Moses Browning’s famous pistol was adopted by the U.S. government in 1911 and attained iconic status throughout both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and beyond. This one was made in the middle of World War II. The Model 1911 series of pistols is one of the most successful small arms designs of the 20th century, and in all of modern warfare history, for that matter. The handgun has been produced in quantity in the United States, Argentina, and Norway (the latter two under license production as the M1914 and the M1927 respectively) and was fielded in both World Wars and many of the major and minor conflicts of the century, eventually becoming a commercial success. The Model 1911 continues service in many forms today and is still a favorite among sporting, security, and casual gun lovers all over the world.

When World War II broke out, Remington-Rand had been a typewriter company for 55 years. Nevertheless, the United States needed war material and many manufacturers were pressed into service building things that they had never built before for the war effort. But why didn’t Uncle Sam get Remington Arms to build the pistols? The answer is really pretty simple. The War Department needed Remington Arms to do what it did best and that was to produce ammunition. Other folks could crank out the pistols.

Remington Rand was awarded its first order on March 16th, 1942, for a total of 125,000 1911A1 pistols. The company had no experience building pistols at the time it was awarded the contract. Remington Rand formed a new division to take charge of building the pistols. The division formed was designated Remington Rand “C” Division. After winning the contract, they converted a vacant plant once used for building typewriters to the production of M1911A1 pistols. The old plant was located on Dickerson Street in Syracuse, N.Y. By March of 1945 they were building the lowest price pistol in the war effort and quality was considered second to none. By the end of the war Remington Rand had produced over 875,000 pistols, almost twice as many as Colt and Ithaca combined.
