Description:
.30-03 1906 mfr. WINCHESTER Model 1895 Lever Action Rifle 24” New Haven C&R

Box Magazine Fed Lever Design by John Moses Browning!

Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1895 lever action repeating rifle manufactured in 1906 in New Haven, Connecticut, and chambered in .30-03, the US military cartridge that was adopted after the .30-40 Krag and just before the .30-06, which was a tweaking of the .30-03. As this change happened only a few years after the .30-03 was adopted, rifles chambered for the cartridge are scarce.

The Model 1895 was the first Winchester rifle to feature a box magazine located underneath the action instead of the tubular magazine design, which had remained fundamentally unchanged from the Winchester Model 1866. This allowed the rifle to safely chamber military and hunting cartridges with pointed bullets. The M1895 was also the last of the lever-action rifles to be designed by John Moses Browning and featured a rear locking bolt as in his previous designs dating back to the Winchester Model 1886. The M1895 was the strongest lever-action rifle Winchester had produced, designed to handle the increased pressures generated by the more powerful smokeless powder cartridges entering common use at the time of its introduction.

The overall condition is fine. Excellent action. This example sports a solid stock in fine shape, with an expected amount of handling evidence. Bright, sharply rifled bore. Original finish is mostly preserved. The receiver has a scuff on the right side. Markings are legible. The “Monte Carlo Cheek Pad” is in good shape.
