Description:
Antique very early Smith &Wesson 1st model Baby Russian delivered to a Milo Legg... More info on him later.. This a very rare early Baby Russian with the Aldrich Safety system plugged screw hole... It is also rare because of the blue finish as most all 1st model Baby Russians and also the 2nd models you will find are nickel plated. It is very hard to find either model in blue finish. According to the Factory Letter that comes with the gun of course, 10 revolvers were made with the Aldrich safety system completed. However the first 1500 frames were already manufactured with a small screw hole and screw located on the right side of the frame. This gun is S/N 265.. According to the letter again, this gun was shipped on April 11th to a Milo Legg, Smith & Wesson shop, Spring field MA. Blue finish 3 1/4” barrel, smooth walnut grips and in the .38 S&W caliber... Roy Jinks goes on to say it would be his guess that Milo Leggs was the son of Samuel Leggs who was the foreman of the Smith & Wesson frame department. On further research we find that Milo was probably Samuel's brother and Samuel died about a year and a half after giving the gun to Milo... A Mr. Jim Boyer ordered this letter in January 2001 and is the first letter I have had in 36 years with a fellow with the same last name as me !!! No relation of course. OK, now for the description. S/N 265 and ALL number matching on the frame, barrel, barrel latch and cylinder. Lots of original blue finish remains and is slightly thinning but still bright.. The barrel has about 45% thinning  blue. Just worn off mainly on the sides of the barrel. The cylinder no bright blue but maybe some hints of faded blue down in the flutes. The frame has about 70% thinning blue on the sides and bottom.. Just traces of blue on the back strap towards the top behind the hammer. No blue remains on the front grip strap. The balance of the metal is a butter smooth medium brown patina.. No rust or any pitting is present. The trigger has 100% bright blue. The barrel latch has about 70% blue. The hammer has about 25% toning case colors on the left side and about 90% case colors on the back of the hammer where protected. The mechanics are excellent.. Crisp and tight as a new gun. Both safety and full cock notches and trigger sear are perfect and positive. Rock solid barrel to frame fit at the latch and the hinge. Original nickel plated front sight never filed on or messed with. The grips are about excellent with no cracks or chips but do have some dings on the bottom as you can see in the photo of the S/N. The right grip is stamp numbered 265 matching. The grips are a perfect snap on factory fit. All markings are excellent. This a very nice documented and quite difficult to find 1st model Baby Russian and would be a perfect little Smith for someones collection of these models. I have had this gun in my personal collection since 2012. It is time for the next care holder to enjoy it as much as I have. Call 765-728-8049 with any questions or more photos.
