Description: SOLD...Antique Colt Pocket Breech Loader or as some call them conversions in ,38 caliber center fire.. This is the most common of the 7 types of these breech loaders. This is the type 5 with the shorter 3 1/2” round barrels with no loading gates and no ejectors. About 3'400 were made with new parts and about 6'700 were made from left over Colt 1849 percussion parts as this gun is in the higher S/N range. The S/N of this one is 317787 and is all matching including the arbor pin but the wedge is number 9693 but it is an original Colt Pocket wedge with no spring as is correct. The excellent book written by John Breslin, William Pirie and David Price goes into great details on these breech loaders.. I sold one of these type 5's to William Pirie years ago and he sent me a copy of this book. He explains that the three of them spent 12 years in the Colt archives collection information on these somewhat mystery breech loaders as not much info. at all has been written about them. This gun is factory nickel plated. The barrel has about 45% to 50% nickel. The cylinder has about 45% nickel and the frame has the most at about 75%.. The back strap has just traces of nickel with the most being on the butt.. This is one of the more rare ones built with a steel back strap and trigger guard as explained in the book and these were found only in this S/N range. The trigger guard has 100% nickel. The hammer has overall about 80%. The mechanics are excellent. Crisp and tight as a new gun. NO cylinder side roll. Rock solid barrel to frame fit. You have to tap the barrel loose from the frame with a wooden dowel through one of the cylinder chambers to remove it. It is still that tight. The markings are excellent but a light strike on the front part of the bottom PAT. marking on the left side of the frame and the last two digits of the S/N on the butt. The cylinder scene is very nice and in much detail with an over all 80% visible. All the screw heads are sharp and clean and not burred up from turning. The grips are excellent with no cracks or chips and still retain about 95% original varnish.. A perfect factory fit as well. The bore is very good with just some very minor roughness down in the groves but perfectly strong and sharp rifling and no rings or bulges. The cylinder chambers are very nice as well with just a little minor speckling at the ends. This is a very nice example of the type 5 with quite a bit of factory finish and priced very reasonable..
