The Winchester Model 1895 chambered in .405 Winchester (.405 WCF) is one of the most storied combinations in American firearms history. Often called the \"King of Lever Actions,\" it famously served as President Theodore Roosevelt’s \"medicine gun\" for lions during his 1909 African safari.

The Rifle: Winchester Model 1895
- Designed by John Browning, the Model 1895 was a radical departure from previous lever guns.
- Box Magazine: It was the first Winchester lever-action to use a non-detachable box magazine rather than a tube. This allowed the use of powerful, pointed (spitzer) bullets that would be dangerous in a tube magazine due to the risk of recoil-induced primer ignition.
- Strength: It was built to handle the higher pressures of the then-new smokeless powder era.
- Distinctive Profile: The magazine protrudes below the receiver, giving the rifle its unique, somewhat \"ungainly\" look that fans either love or hate.

The Cartridge: .405 WCF
- Introduced in 1904, the .405 Winchester was the most powerful lever-action cartridge of its time, a title it held for decades.
- Specs: It typically fires a 300-grain bullet at approximately 2,200 fps, generating roughly 3,225 ft-lbs of energy at the muzzle.
- Bullet Diameter: It uses a unique .411-inch diameter bullet, which makes handloading components slightly more specialized than standard .40 or .41 calibers.
- Recoil: Shooting the .405 in the relatively light 1895 frame is often described as \"stout\"—the rifle’s steel buttplate is known for being unforgiving on the shoulder.

This rifle was manufactured in 1913.
