Description:
French Tabatière Breech Loading Rifle converted from a French Model 1857 to shotgun. Fitted with a smoothbore barrel cut down to 23", a brass receiver, steel furniture and walnut stocks.

The firearm is in fair condition although it has been heavily customized. The barrel has been cut down, a saddle ring was added. The stock features native-style adornments including a rawhide beaded and tacked wrap on the foreend, and  brass tacks and carving on the buttstock. The carvings read "Feb 9 1885" and LFZ. It is unknown when the adornments were added. Condition of the bore is fair with some light rust near the breech.

In the 1880s the French Government disposed of most of their Tabatière rifles to Belgium for conversion into half stocked 12 gauge shotguns. Most were converted from the 1857 French back-action percussion rifle. They were marketed as a cheap shotgun in the Unites States and commonly had markings like "Zulu" or "Champion."

Manufactured 1860's, converted 1880's.
