All of these had a tiny A inspectors stamp and the OWA cartouche when manufactored . This revolver was shipped on 1 - 5 - 1874 . Of the 12,500 Ainsworth Revolvers produced there have been only 375 as being in collections today , This figure includes those Artillery revolvers having the early type frame thus making Cavalry Model with all matching numbers even more desirable to collectors today . In looking over the Ainsworth inspected revolver , several distingusihing physical characteristics which are endemic to these early U S Revolvers and which seem to enhance their appeal to collectors are : 1 Early Script style barrel address . 2 Two line patent date markings 3 Small type U S stampings 4 The single cartouche on left grip 5The small cylinder stops 6 The unbeveled cylinder and ejector houseing tip . 7 The bullseye style ejector rod head 8 The tiny single initial Ordnance Sub - inspctors letter A in the correct places , 9 Frist style ejector rod houseing A study of the Colt Single Action Army Revolver by Ron Graham , John A Kopec < and C .
