The Smith & Wesson Model 17, also known as the K-22 Masterpiece, is widely considered one of the finest .22 LR revolvers ever produced. Built on the medium-sized "K" frame, it was designed to provide target shooters with a rimfire trainer that matched the weight, feel, and trigger pull of S&W's larger-caliber service revolvers. Ruger uses durable coil springs rather than the flat leaf springs found in traditional revolvers (like the Colt SAA), making it less prone to mechanical breakage over time. Opening the loading gate automatically locks the trigger and hammer, a safety feature that also makes loading and unloading more intuitive.
