Description:
This is a very fine English double rifle - it is a W.W. Greener , St. Mary's Works Birmingham.  It is serial no. 11935, marked on the receiver, lower tang and both barrels, made approx. 1873.   The left side of the receiver is marked "For Boxer cartridge .450 "- I believe the 'Boxer'  indicated a coiled, or spiral wrapped brass or tin case.  A chamber cast indicates that this has the identical chamber dimentions of the .450 BPE  3 1/4".  The rifle is in very good to excellent overall condition - the barrels are on face and lock up tightly. The under lever closes snugly. The barrels are 26" long with very nice bores, bright, with very nice Henry's rifling with  slight wear.  The barrels are marked on the underside with Henry's Patent, A&T ( fluid steel ), 45 and 46, and various proof marks.  There are no recent import marks - there is a hang tag in the case marked - "bought 9/10/36 - cost $254, sell $300".   The barrels have a matted rib, a standing rear sight and one folding leaf with a fixed front sight.  The rifle functions perfectly - the hammers have a strong positive feel at half and full cock. The triggers release crisply, the firing pins are spring loaded.  Screws are all nice.
The wood is a beautiful figured walnut, with a smooth  feel and checkering that is worn from carry.  The wood is solid, not cracked and a perfect wood to metal fit.  The foreend wedge is tight and holds the foreend snugly, the wood shows  wear to the checkering and a few marks. The L.O.P. is approx. 14 3/8 to the front trigger.   The case shows years of wear and is coming apart, but it has preserved the rifle.  Included are a 450 mold, a decapper, various loading tools, and parts for a cleaning rod - no wood for the rod.  The case is marked R.P.Thatcher - presumably from England?
After owning this rifle for some time I really wanted to experience loading and shooting it - I obtained a copy of  Graeme Wright's excellent book - "Shooting The British Double Rifle" - it has many excellent loads and data for both smokeless and black powder.   Modern .450 3 1/4" Nito brass is perfect - this rifle uses the thin rim.  I used Hornady 450 Nitro dies , which was almost perfect - the cases still needed a slightly tighter squeeze about an inch above the rim.  I believe that the earlier .450 3 1/4 chambers were a hair tighter/smaller .   I  did fire this rifle twice, with blackpowder - FUN!    This was designed as an Express type load with lighter bullets, and can still be used today for almost any game.  This is a great rifle, a piece of fine English gunmaking.    **** This is an antique and can ship to the new owner in Most states - some areas still require FFL.  Check or certified funds preferred. Shipping will be in a heavy duty, overpack case and fully insured, ****  Thank you
