This is a rare and interesting rifle with some intriguing mysteries surrounding its existence. It is one of a small number of copies of the 1853 Sharps slant breech rifles and carbines that was part of a cache discovered in Kathmandu, Nepal, and purchased from the government of Nepal in the late 1990s along with hundreds of other antique weapons dating to the 19th century. These guns have long been attributed to the Confederate States of America. There were more Sharps carbine copies than rifle copies. The action is very well made, leading to speculation that they were made in either Britain, Belgium or, more intriguing, by the Confederacy late in the American Civil War. Some of the latter is based on wood samples from stocks identified as Honduran Mohogany. The assumption being that the Confederates used pre-war Mahogany furniture for the stocks. Research by authorities on Confederate weapons have uncovered no record of any model 1853 Sharps copies being manufactured by the Confederacy, but records could possibly have never been kept. As the action has no markings, it will just have to be left up to your imagination. The original Sharps Model 1853 Slant Breech had a production run between 1854 and 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut. The carbine version of the Sharps Model 1853 is known for their iconic role in the abolitionist movement, both in the hands of John Brown during his raid of Harper’s Ferry Arsenal, as well as those of abolitionist Henry Ward Beecher, who said of the Sharps “that there was more moral power in those instruments, so far as the slaveholders of Kansas were concerned, than in 100 Bibles”. These powerful, accurate and reliable rifles certainly saw history from a firsthand perspective during the conflicts leading up to the Civil War, the war itself, and beyond on the frontier. The overall condition is very good. Original gray patina. Brass buttplate and forend cap. The stock remains solid with an expected amount of dents and dings. The action is strong. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40-3/8 inches. Caliber: .54 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos.
