Description: This is a Model 1842 Springfield Musket, that is one of 10,000 that were rifled by the U.S. Ordinence Department. Long range sights were installed and new cupped ramrods were made. This one was first made in 1848 and was converted to a rifle in 1853. The lock is dated 1848 and the Barrell is dated 1853. This was the start of the transition to rifled over smooth bore shoulder arms. This rifle is in Very Good condition and was very accurate at 200 yards compared to 80 to 100 yards for a smoothbore.
