Description:
Lyon & Lyon of Calcutta .500 Express 3 1/4" for the heavy load 570 grain bullet. The action is border engraved with strong case colors, Jones underlever, rebounding hammers and strong locks with nice triggers. The rear tang features a modern peep sight that is well placed and is surprisingly well suited to the rifle. The action is very tight on the face and the lumps show no signs of having been adjusted and the lever cams nicely and is easy to open. The barrels are 27" with good black and near perfect bores. These are heavy profile barrels and along with the contour of the action and stock make this rifle feel more like an early nitro rifle than the average black powder hammer double. The barrels are marked with 68-570 proof and black powder 500EX, the rib is engraved "Ammunition 3 1/4" 500 Express" and "Lyon & Lyon late from Purdey & Sons, London & Calcutta, sights are two folded rear with a modern insert front sight that has a white globe surrounding a dark bead center that really works well! The stocks are later replacements that were very well done by a professional stockmaker who knew how to get the lines correct and chose wood for both strength and beauty, 14 3/4" length of pull to a Silvers pad, pistol grip with a cap and splinter fore end. The case is a very high quality modern replacement, oak and leather with some accessories, the case is in near new condition. This is a heavy rifle at 12 pounds 3oz and will have lovely shooting characteristics due to the forward balance and heavy profile. This rifle was hunted frequently in Africa by my Father. Brass is available if interested.
