Lysander Wilkins Babbitt was born January of 1812 in Ovid, Seneca County, New York. His father was a blacksmith and Lysander was so inclined and so apprenticed as a gunmaker circa 1828 through 1833. He went West and came to Iowa by way of Cleveland, Ohio (c1836; 14 Bank St), and settled in Burlington. He trapped up the Des Moines river only to be waylaid by Indians and had his furs stolen. He was reported or believed dead and his wife had begun to divest of their properties when he came back alive. Instead of stopping her selling their assets he encouraged it and the family moved around Iowa, to Muscatine, Marion County, Knoxville, and Kanesville, which would become Council Bluffs. Besides the gunsmithing he got into a mercantile store, bought a newspaper, The Bugle of Council Bluffs, and was editor of it through 1880. He was also involved in civil service and politics, serving in the state legislature and as mayor of Council Bluffs, but never lost his love of firearms and smithing. He was known as a keen shot and an adept hunter. He passed away in 1885 in Beebe, Arkansas. The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is sharply rifled. The stock is solid.
