Description:
22 inch round barrel chambered in 45-70 caliber with a good bore with some shine and scattered roughness with visible 3 groove rifling. Front sight is absent with a new dovetail cut and a blade front with correct rear sight base that is scaled to 500 yards and sight ladder graduated to 1200 yards. Correct with the barrel being unmarked and without the eagle head and proof marks. Breech block is marked "Model 1873" with eagle head' crossed arrows and "U.S.".Lockplate is marked in three lines "US/Springfield/1873" with spread eagle. Smooth trigger. The walnut stock is a period replacement  with several dings and some chipping. There are no cleaning rods or shell extractor in the butt. Saddle ring is missing. Mechanically appears to function well. This is serial number 17816 which falls between serial number 17761 and 18006 which are both documented as 7th Cavalry issued. An example of a possible Custer issued carbine with a story to tell.
