Sights include a pinned blade front and correct "C" marked carbine rear. Most thinning barrel blue remains with crisp markings. Vivid casehardening on the breech block "U.S.Model 1873" marked trapdoor. Good markings on the lockplate. A good amount of blue remains on all metal parts with some thinning on the lower tang where you would have your hand. Correct Star marked serial number. Walnut stock is in good condition with some minor handling mars and a crisp cartouche dated "1882" and the "P" in the circle proof. It has the cleaning rods & shell extractor in the butt as well. Also marked on left of the buttstock is "S.P.F.C.8" which indicates ownership by the Pennsylvania State Police Force, Troop C. They were formed in 1905 and were involved with dealing with numerous labor disputes during the early 1900s. According to research 220 of the Trapdoor carbines were purchased in 1906 and another 220 in 1909. The initial deliveries were primarily Model 1877s that had been refurbished during the early 1880s, many of which bear starred serial number suffixes. A very fine looking carbine that is pretty scarce as only 440 have been made and not very many have been accounted for. This information is explained in an article titled "The PA State Police: Springfield .45 Trapdoor Carbines" by Farrington and Puelo in the August 2007 Man at Arms magazine.
