This is a handsome, all-matching double rifle, made ca. 1903, that has 90-92% of the original blue finish remaining on the barrels, with some silvering at the muzzles, as well as a few small spots of grayed metal along the tubes. The matted quarter-rib has a double folding leaf express sight, as well as a rear claw mount (the forward mount is not present and there is instead a blank installed in its place). The right tube is marked, "HOLLAND & HOLLAND 98 NEW BOND STREET, LONDON" at the breech, with "WINNERS OF ALL THE FIELD RIFLE TRIALS, LONDON" on the left breech. The original metal front sight hood is still present. The frame and lockplates have full British scrollwork engraving with "HOLLAND & HOLLAND" ribands on the sideplates, and "THE ROYAL / HAMMERLESS" on the underside. The exterior metal has an overall pleasant pewter gray patina, with brighter original color case-hardening on the protected areas of the water table, standing breech, and on the interior forend fittings. The finely checkered forend has minor handling marks and blemishes scattered about the added oil finish, with some areas of moderate flattening present on the checkering points. The pistol-grip buttstock has moderate handling marks and surface blemishes scattered about the wood, most noticeably along the lower edge of the rounded cheek-piece and other areas of the left side. The stock exhibits a very slight cast for a right-handed shooter, and has a 13" LOP to a checkered wood butt, with drops of 1 5/8" and 2 1/2" respectively. The lock-up is rock solid, the barrels are on-face, and the lever rest just right of center. The locks and one-piece extractor function flawlessly, and the rifle weighs in at 9 lbs. The rifle is housed in an original Holland & Holland leather traveling case with scarlet baize-lined interior and intact maker’s label. Accompanying the rifle are: an original two-piece cleaning rod, two cleaning tips (bronze jag and a bore brush), three nickel snap caps, carved bone container with two spare front sight inserts, pewter oil bottle, original leather sling, case key, and a modern Holland & Holland polishing cloth. This is a splendid and desirable Holland & Holland double rifle, chambered in a genuinely useful medium game cartridge for North America, and in very good-fine condition overall.
