Description: Swiss Model 1878 Vetterli 10.4×38 Bolt-Action Rifle — 1883 Eidgenössisches Schützenfest Lugano Prize Rifle Waffenfabrik Bern Special-Order Presentation Piece — Centerfire-Converted — Silver Stock Cartouche — Near Perfect Condition Description Here is an extraordinary piece of Swiss shooting history: the first-prize presentation rifle awarded to the victor of the 1883 Eidgenössisches Schützenfest (Federal Shooting Festival) in Lugano, presented by the Swiss government. This is a special-order sharpshooter-configuration M1878 Vetterli built at the Waffenfabrik Bern, serial number 4002, and is unlike anything you will find on the market. Originally chambered for the Gewehrpatrone 1863 10.4×38 rimfire, the rifle has been professionally converted to centerfire by master gunsmith Roger Rerat of Laufen, making it a shooter as well as a collector's centerpiece. Add this one-of-a-kind historic firearm to your collection. Action & Metalwork Bolt-action Vetterli action in near-perfect condition with only very light handling marks. Swiss military inspection marks present and correct throughout. The special-order rear sight features micrometer-adjustable traverse — a premium fitting not found on standard-issue rifles. Double set trigger. All serial numbers matching. Barrel 32¼" barrel with mirror-bright bore throughout. Chambered 10.4×38R centerfire following the Rerat conversion; 8mm Lebel brass can be reformed for the chamber, and preformed brass is periodically available from Buffalo Arms. Stock Fancy-grade walnut stock in near-perfect condition with only very few handling marks. Swiss buttplate. Silver cartouche inletted into the buttstock commemorating the 1883 Lugano Schützenfest event — the definitive provenance marker for this presentation piece. Specifications
Near-perfect metal and wood finish throughout, with only very few light handling marks consistent with careful storage. Bore is mirror bright. All matching serial numbers. This is an exceptional survivor for a 143-year-old presentation-grade firearm and represents a once-in-a-career acquisition for the serious Swiss militaria or Schützenfest collector.
