Description:
CIVIL WAR Antique U.S. STARR M1863 ARMY Single Action .44 Caliber Revolver

1 of 23,000 Model 1863 Single Action Armies

Here we present an antique U.S. Starr Arms Co. Model 1863 Army Single Action Revolver, made during its production run between 1863-65 in New York City. Requiring all manners of firearms during the Civil War, the U.S. government commissioned the Starr Arms Company to produce a Single Action version of its Double Action revolver. Both versions were taken on by the North with roughly 47,454 total produced.

These saw the most use in the Western Campaign with three sub-variants of the base design, with those being the Double Action Navy of 1858 in .36 caliber, the Double Action Army of 1858 in .44 caliber, and the Single Action Army of 1863 in .44 caliber. Production numbers reached 3,000, 21,454, and 23,000 respectfully. Starr revolvers were one of the top handguns found on Civil War battlefields.

This gun was possibly brought home by a coming home soldier or sold on the surplus market by the U.S. government after the war. Various conversions were performed on old percussion revolvers as a matter of practicality, and taken all over the United States, including out West.

This example features numerous single letter inspection marks along with a cartouche on the right grip. This is a true example of a battle worn Civil War revolver.

The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action is strong, with the caveat that the cylinder has trouble indexing on one of the chambers, requiring just a slight amount of help. Cylinder lockup is good. The bore is patinated with good rifling. The grip is solid and showing a good Ordnance inspector cartouche on the right and a partial on the left. The numbers match on the barrel, frame, and cylinder. A good example of the scarcer single action version of the Starr revolver!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 8 inches.

Caliber: .44 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
