Description:
NSN, .75 Caliber, 39" barrel with a dark, pitted bore. This is an imposing musket, measuring just over 55" in overall length, and weighing in at just over 11 lbs. The barrel and EIC Lion and Crown marked lock have an overall dark plum-brown patina with areas of thin surface freckling and minor pinprick pitting scattered throughout. Slightly heavier pitting is present on the hammer, as well as on and around the nipple bolster (the nipple itself is a more modern and little-used replacement). The wedge-fastened stock is well-worn, but still in very good shape, with numerous small handling marks and minor blemishes along the thick, added oil finish throughout. There are some minor chips missing from around the edges of the lockplate, as well as a linear crack opposite the lock running up forward from the rear lock screw bolster. Numerous Nepalese markings are present on both the wood and on some of the brass fittings and furniture including an issue or rack number ("314"). The lock is fully functional and locks firmly at both half and full-cock. The musket has the original iron ramrod, and is also accompanied by a rarely seen original socket bayonet that measures 19 3/4" overall, with a 15 3/4" angular blade with hollow ground back flutes. The socket has extensive Nepalese markings along with a stylized EIC Lion, and a matching number ("314"). These muskets were developed in parallel with the British Pattern 1842 Musket and are very similar, but differ in being more robust and slightly more simplified for ease of repair and general serviceability. This example is in very good plus condition, with its original matching bayonet, and would make a splendid addition to any collection. Antique;
