Winchester discontinued the 1894 rifle in 1924 and introduced the M-55 as a replacement. This rifle was made seven years after rifle production ceased and was one of the parts clean-up guns put together from remaining parts. This example has all the correct late M-94 markings on the barrel etc. and has a 26” round barrel with rare 2/3 magazine. It is fitted with the last style of shotgun butt with fluted comb and serrated steel butt plate- this is the standard butt stock found on the M-55. It has a little better than standard walnut often found on special order rifles. The barrel and magazine tube retain about all the deep factory blue and is fitted with a buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar and Lyman blade/bead front sight. As is typical of rifles of this period, the receiver blue has flaked to gray with some very thin blue on the bolt and good blue on the loading gate. Screw heads look untouched. Stock and forend show tight wood to metal fit and there are four old “kill notches” in the upper left side of the forend just ahead of the receiver. 1931 saw one of the lowest production rates for the M-94 with only 2400 made. This was a hard time with the Great Depression strangling the country. Of the 2400 made that year I’m sure only a few were made from left-over rifle parts or special ordered. A true Model 94 oddity!
