Description:
RARE Antique CIVIL WAR Era 2nd Model COLT DRAGOON .44 PERCUSSION Revolver

One of 2,700; First Year Production, Made in 1850

Here we present an antique U.S. issue Colt 2nd Model Dragoon Revolver, manufactured in 1850 in Hartford, Connecticut. Only an estimated 2,700 Second Model Dragoons revolvers were manufactured by Colt around 1850 and 1851 compared to 7,000 of the First Model Dragoons and 10,500 Third Model Dragoons. They are thus by far the scarcest of the primary Colt Dragoon revolvers. At least part of an Army contract for 1000 revolvers dated February 4, 1850, was filled with 2nd Dragoon Revolvers. The revolver has the distinctive combination of a square-back, brass trigger guard and rectangular cylinder stops found only on the 2nd Model Dragoons and has the V-shaped mainspring used to about serial number 10,000.
Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. This one would have seen use during the American Civil War. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection, a Civil War era Colt Dragoon!

It has the look of one that might have been dug, then cleaned. The action is partially functional in that the hammer cocks, the cylinder revolves, and the trigger releases the hammer, but there is no mainspring tension. The bore is dark and pitted with visible rifling (probably what the exterior looked like before the oxidation was removed). The grip is a replacement. The only remaining legible numbers are on the trigger guard and the frame and they match.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .44 Percussion
