Designed by Paul Mauser under the factory designation Construktion 1878 (C78), the Zig-Zag revolver was the first handgun designed and developed by Paul Mauser and his firm. A competitor to be the first centerfire cartridge-fed handgun adopted by the German military, the 1878 scored high marks in overall performance, though concerns about the complexity of the design led them to choose the 1879 Reichs revolver instead. The original C78 zig-zag revolver had a solid frame and loading gate. It was developed as a test model for the 1879 German trials to provide the first German military handgun to fire modern brass cartridges and to replace the earlier needle-fire and pinfire revolvers. The Model 1878 was the first German revolver to be mass-produced for modern center-fire cartridges. It was also called the “zig-zag” in reference to the design of the six-round zig-zag grooved cylinder and was chambered in cartridges ranging from 6 mm to 11 mm calibers. Later in 1886, and improved design hinged frame top break version chambered in 9mm was introduced with a swing out cylinder. Sights are fixed, with “GEBR. MAUSER & Cle OBERNDORF a/N. WURTTEMBERG. 1878” on top of the barrel rib. The overall condition is fine. This example is professionally refinished. The action is excellent. Bright bore with crisp rifling. Markings are sharp. Both grips are fine with minimal handling wear. Visible numbers match. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 3-3/4 inches.
