Description: This antique Marlin Model 1894 takedown rifle is an outstanding early production example that remains in exceptionally high condition, a rarity among rifles that were overwhelmingly purchased as hard-use working guns. The accompanying factory letter confirms the rifle was shipped on October 4, 1894, and lists the rifle with a 24 inch octagon barrel in .38 caliber with takedown configuration. High-condition early Model 1894 rifles are scarce today, particularly standard configuration examples such as this, making it a highly desirable addition to any advanced lever action collection. The rifle is fitted with a German silver blade front sight paired with an elevation adjustable rear sight. The top barrel flat bears the correct two-line Marlin address ahead of the rear sight and “38-W” caliber marking at the breech. The casehardened receiver is marked “MARLIN SAFETY,” while the upper tang is correctly marked “MODEL 1894” and factory drilled and tapped for a tang sight, with filler screws remaining in place. The antique serial number is stamped on the underside of the receiver. It is mounted with a walnut forearm and straight grip stock fitted with a casehardened crescent buttplate, completing a classic and highly attractive example of Marlin’s iconic frontier-era lever action rifle. Condition: Excellent, retaining 98% plus original blue finish on the barrel and magazine with thinning on the balance. The receiver retains 95% plus vivid original case colors. The hammer, lever, takedown collar and buttplate retain 85% original case colors. The wood is very fine with a shallow divot on the right side of the wrist, some minor handling marks, and most of the original varnish remaining. Mechanically excellent.
