Description:
This DWM Luger (M-23) was made in German for the Finnish Army between 1920 and 1929.  It is chambered in 7.62mm (aka .30 Luger) and has a 4-inch barrel.

After World War I, Germany was prohibited from manufacturing and selling military weaponry.  Among specific prohibitions were pistol with barrels greater than 100 mm (four inches) and pistols chambered in 9mm caliber.  During that time, Finland was in need of pistols for its military and police and was interested in the German Luger.  So, beginning in 1920, Germany modified the Luger P08 design to stay within the prohibition specifications and begun manufacturing and selling them to Finland and did so until 1929.  Finland redesignated those guns as the M-23 and stamped them all with a boxed ‘SA’, Finland’s acceptance stamp.  Some 10,000 were sold to Finland by 1929.

Like the other Lugers sold to Finland, this pistol has few markings.  The top of the toggle train is stamped with the manufacturer’s name, DWM (Deutsche Waffen und Munitionsfabriken).  On the left side of the frame, just before the barrel, is a crown over the letter N, German commercial nitro proof mark used before WWII.  Just behind this proof mark are the boxed letters ‘SA’, Finland’s acceptance mark.  On the bottom of the frame, just forward of the trigger guard and under the barrel is the serial number, 7554.  Just forward of the serial number, but on the bottom of the barrel this same serial number is stamped again.  The crown over the letter ‘N’ appears again just forward that serial number.  Forward of that, again on the bottom of the barrel, are two stamped lines.  The first line reads, “CAI  ST  A  VT”.  This is the stamp of the U.S. importer - Century Arms International, St. Albans, Vermont.  The second line reads, “M-23  GER  7.65 PARA.”  Above the safety lever on the left side of the pistol is stamped “GESIGHERT”. On the bottom of the takedown lever (left side of pistol), is stamped ”39”.  On the side plate (left side of the pistol) is stamped “99”.  On the rear of the toggle train, just below the rear sight, is stamped “99”.  These three numbers should be the same as the last two numbers of the serial, but they are not.  Obviously, this pistol contains parts from other Lugers.

Apart having a few parts from other Lugers, overall, this gun is in excellent condition – 95 percent.  It retains almost all of it original, with scattered scraps and marrs, especially on the left side of the frame. There is also wear on the high parts and corners of the frame.  The checkering on the walnut grips are beginning to get smooth, especially on the right panel.  The left panel checkering is still well defined.  There is one small shallow gouge on the bottom front of the left panel.  The magazine is not original to this gun.  It looks almost new.  The barrel is most surprising; it is bright and shiny, very good condition.  The muzzle show a little holster on the right side.  I think the gun was most carried and fired little.

The pistol comes with one original magazine.  There are no box, papers, or other accessories.
