Stevens 77E – 12 Gauge – 28" Barrel – 1960 Model

The Stevens 77E has always been a budget friendly shotgun but “budget friendly" doesn’t mean that they aren’t reliable. In fact, the U.S. military used around 66,000 of these shotguns during the Vietnam War. Those shotguns had a more compact barrel but were the same model.

The gun that we have on consignment is a 12 Gauge model with a 28 inch barrel. There is no serial number but, as a pre-1968 model, no serial number is required. It is chambered to fire 2-3/4" shells. Stevens shotguns generally had a date code stamped on them but the specific location of the code varied widely. There is a 5L date code on the left side of the barrel and a 7L date code on the top of the barrel. This, along with production in Westfield, MA would seem to indicate 1960 production. Normally, the choke would be stamped on the barrel (i.e. Full, etc.). We do not find the choke stamped on the barrel but the symbols ** are next to the 5L date code on the left side of the barrel.

The wood on this shotgun is in Good condition. There are signs of normal use but we find no cracks. The black, ribbed buttpad is in Very Good condition. The receiver finish is in Very Good condition but “CPF 12000" has been etched on the right side of the receiver. In some cases, we have seen owners use an electro pen to mark some identifying information on their firearm. We do not know, specifically, why that appears on this gun. There is a single bead sight at the end of the barrel and a safety located just behind the trigger guard.

The barrel has some pitting and surface oxidation, primarily on the left side of the barrel. Please see the photos as we’ve attempted to show this. The bore is clean and the barrel is bright and in good condition. The action is smooth.

If you are looking for an affordable, but reliable, vintage shotgun, please see if this is one that would fit that bill.

Purchase is for the shotgun only. No other items are included in the sale.

This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this shotgun. We have performed our function checks and find only cosmetic issues. As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are comfortable with the condition of the shotgun.
