Description:
RARE Antique AMERICAN Civil War SHARPS & HANKINS M1862 NAVY Carbine w/COVER

One of 6,686 Navy Purchased WITH ORIGINAL COVER

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Sharps & Hankins Model 1862 Navy Carbine made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Made from 1862-65, the total production of the Navy Carbine was only 6,686, making this quite a scarce representative of a Civil War long arm. These carbines are believed to have seen extensive service aboard various vessels in both the Union's "blue water" and "brown water" navies during the American Civil War. Being that they were intended for use on the water, the Navy carbine was factory fitted with a very tight leather cover to prevent corrosion on the barrel, most of which have long disintegrated. Then, there is this one! Most of these covers were long gone, unlike this example which retains all of the entire cover. The leather cover on the barrel was secured by a band at the muzzle and screws at the breech.  It has a blade front sight, an adjustable rear sight, and standard Sharps & Hankins markings.

The shape of the carbine is distinctly Sharps (much like their pepperboxes) and operates a bit differently than other carbines of the era. The trigger guard doubles as a lever, which is opened by pressing a small tab inside the smaller loop of the lever. Opening the lever slides the barrel away from the recoil shield for loading and unloading. It has a great elevating rear sight and brass butt-plate.

The inspector’s mark to the left of the action is stamped "P/HKH" for Rear Admiral Henry Kuhn Hoff of the United States Navy. During his long career, he took part in combat in Sumatra and in the American Civil War. As mentioned above, this example is fitted with the desirable leather barrel cover.

The overall condition is fine. Original gray patina. Original leather barrel wrap. The wrap is in very good shape with some light and expected leather cracking.  Strong action. The lever latch intermittently holds the lever in place, allowing it to fall slightly with gravity. The buttstock is revarnished and remains in fine shape. Markings are clear. “P/HKH” is on the left side of the frame.

Finding these carbines with the leather cover in such good shape is very rare.
