Description:
"1859" dated lock and barrel. Reportedly, 3,772 of these iron mounted "Type II" Model 1855 two-band rifles were fabricated at Harpers Ferry c. 1859-1861 , per page 266 of "American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III" by George D. Moller. Federal eagle stamped on the Maynard tape primer door, with "U.S./HARPER'S FERRY" at the front of the lock. "V/P/(eagle head)" proofs at the upper left breech of the barrel. The left stock flat has an outline of an oval cartouche stamp. Includes an extra percussion nipple in the patchbox.
ConditionFine, with mostly bright surfaces, light flash pitting, freckling and mostly defined markings in the metal. Stock is very good with handling wear, dents and scratches and mechanically functions correctly.
These desirable Harpers Ferry Model 1855 two-band rifles saw hard Civil War service in both Union and Confederate hands, with limited surviving examples today.
