Description: Parker Bros. was a gun manufacturer that specialized in SxS shotguns, producing a wide variety of models for anyone and everyone, ranging from the simple, utilitarian Trojan Model (33,000 mfg.) all the way up to the exquisite A-1 Special Grade (80 mfg.). The example here is a GH model. Prior to the letter grade system, Parker Bros. used the term “Grade 2” to refer to what would become known as the E, F, G, H, EH, and GH models. The latter two models were hammerless types, the former were hammer types. All Grade 2 shotguns were marketed toward those that wanted a shotgun with a little more adornment than the average gun, and who was willing to pay $20 more for a gun that looked better and was well balanced. Grade 2 production began in 1875, with the “GH” label being applied at a later time. Ultimately, the GH/Grade 2 was Parker’s second-best selling model with 31,788 examples of the hammerless types being built. By comparison, Parker’s biggest selling model was the VH model with approx. 79,000 produced. The GH model exhibited here has Damascus Steel barrels. It does not have ejectors (any Parker shotgun with ejectors has an E suffix added to its model designation, with the exception of the A-1). The GH is in fairly good shape. The barrels have some minor rust present. The right barrel originally had a relatively noticeable ding in the surface with some protrusion into the bore. The store’s gunsmith has worked on this issue to reduce the amount of protrusion in the bore and keep it to a minimum (see picture 14). As well as this the face of the muzzle (right barrel) has a relatively minor ding. This has been checked to make sure it does not protrude into the bore itself. Aside from this, both bores exhibit a minor amount of pitting. The left bore essentially had a modified choke while the right barrel is a cylinder choke. The barrels are most likely chambered for the older 2_9/16” shells, though they are not marked as such. The bottom of the forearm has a pair of long dents that at first glance appear to be cracks but are not. The case hardened receiver has lost most of the finish which is common for just about any case hardened gun, though some remains on the bottom of the receiver. The stock does not have any cracks though some minor dings are present. The action of the GH is in excellent shape. Overall, despite the wear and tear, this is still a beautiful old shotgun.
