Description:
Dietrich Apel & J.M. Penrod .416 Taylor Custom Left Hand Rifle.
Based on an early Dakota Arms left hand Model 76 action. The action is stamped "375" on the bottom of the recoil lug, designating this an action for .375 H&H length cartridges. Very early version of the Model 76 action and marked only "DaKoTa 76" on the action wall. Has a 3-panel checkered bolt knob, DA M70 type 3-position safety, Da M70 type trigger, a DA flush fitting bottom metal with straddle floorplate and inside-the-bow release. Rifle holds 4 rounds down in the magazine and 1 in the chamber. Milled 2-piece Redfield style rotary bases.
Chambered for .416 Taylor which was developed in the 1970's by Robert Chatfield-Taylor who necked a .458 Win. Mag case down to .416 caliber.
The 24" no. 4 contour MATCO barrel has a slight taper and a 2nd hidden recoil lug on the bottom of the barrel and inletted into the barrel channel of the stock. The barrel also has a Mag-na-Port with no open sights. Top of the barrel is marked: Dietrich Apel - Meriden, NH.
"J.M. Penrod" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel for New Hampshire gunmaker Mark Penrod who did all the metal work.
The barrel and action was later stocked in a high figuered and well laid out blank of CA English walnut by Dietrich Apel, nephew of Kurt and Paul Jaeger and founder of New England custom guns, and with a "drop belly" shaped stock, a left hand beaded cheekpiece, a "shellhammer" type chin strap carved behind the solid steel, two scew grip cap with a smooth flat top and flutted sides. Two panel point pattern checkering on the grip and a wrap point pattern checkering on the forend, an ebony forend tip, and 2 inletted sling swivel attachments on raised pedestals with blind screws.
The rifle remains in very nice condition overall, with just a few handling markshere or there on the stock.
Metal and bore remain excellent.
Very high quality metal work by two very respacted gunmakers.
