Description:
This is an early post-war Mauser action Paul Jaeger custom rifle with a Model 70 barrel built for my father in the early 50's. Typical beautiful Paul Jaeger stock and checkering on this rifle. . This gun has an early Jaeger adjustable trigger as well as his trigger shoe and custom safety. In looking over the rifle to take some photos for this sale I discovered that the words “ Model 70 - .257 Roberts” appears on the barrel, not as a stamp - but more like 'ghost stenciling' which you can only see when the barrel is turned 'just so' in the light. It appears just above where the barrel meets the stock on the left side . I could not capture a photo of this very faint lettering and had actually never seen it before now. There is a spacing of about 1.2” inches between the dash after “Model 70” and the “257 Roberts” lettering. Also there is a P within an oval stamped on the barrel just where it attaches to the receiver. My research on Winchester Model 70s indicates that this is a Winchester proof mark on barrels that it sold to custom gunsmiths. That research also revealed that Winchester stopped selling Model 70 barrels to gunsmiths sometime around 1950. There is a lot of information about this famous gunsmith online for those not familiar with his work. I found a nice article with Google using a search of “Paul Jaeger custom rifles”. The author mentions that after Paul Jaeger moved his shop from Philadelphia to Jenkintown, Pa, there was a period of time during which only the “Jaeger” name appeared on the barrel. This gun is so marked with the name Jaeger alone stamped on the top of the 24” barrel with no other stamping except “Caliber 257” on the barrel's side. My father kept his 1948 Jaeger Catalog which is included in the sale. The bore is clean and bright, this gun has not had a lot of use over the years. Included in sale is an RCBS FL die set, various quantities of 85, 100 and 117 gr bullets, 66 fired shells and 16 new, un-fired shells ( all are R-P).
